Wonder
Struck
by Brian Selznick
A Texas Bluebonnet Award NomineeSM
What
could possibly link the life of a famous New York
actress's daughter in 1927 with the life of a
boy living on the shores of Gunflint Lake, Minnesota, in 1977?
Their two stories come to life in totally different formats:
her story, drawn in pictures and
his story, written in words,
both alternating through Brian Selznick's unique historical fiction
mystery, Wonder
Struck in 2012.
Both
kids wish for something they don't have.
The girl wishes for the love of her mother who
has deserted her for her acting career.
The boy longs to find a father he has never known.
Both kids run away to seek a parent who is out of their reach.
Both kids have similar handicaps.
Both kids love museums.
Neither knows the other exists.
Ben's
story begins in Minnesota where an accident has changed his life forever.
It has robbed him of a beloved mother but has offered clues to finding
a father he never had. In finding the clues, another accident steals
one of his most important possessions. What will happen when he leaves
the hospital without it?
Rose's
story begins in a three-story house on the banks of the Hudson River,
overlooking New York City. Here, she is being held captive by someone
who should care deeply for her. She often slips out of her house, down
to the river, and releases notes that scream for help, notes folded
as boats. What will happen when she makes her way to New York City?
The
Kids' Wings literature guide invites group discussion, problem solving,
research, writing, skill building, creating museums, and a culminating
interactive Jeopardy-type game. Teachers who want students to use fun,
exciting, well-written literature in a story about museums, family,
and history to entice kids to love reading and develop skills as a bonus
will want make this book and the Kids Wings activity guide part of their
classroom libraries.
