The Post family created Post Cereals and became one of the United States' wealthiest families. What happened to their treasure? Could the family have hidden it?

A seventy-year-old mystery remains unsolved, their treasure remains hidden. Their enormous, eloquent apartment has been subdivided into four luxury apartments on New York's Fifth Avenue, remodeled according to Lyon Post's will: WALLS IN THIS STRUCTURE MAY NOT BE DESTROYED OR CHANGED IN ANY WAY. How, then could they section it into four apartments? Architects ADDED new walls in front of the old walls they could not change.

The Posts' aging daughter Eleanor now lives in one of the apartments. She never found her inheritance and stopped searching years ago. Now she has noisy new upstairs neighbors: The Smithforks and their four kids. It doesn't take long for them discover the hidden wall inside, and the youngest sibling is just small enough to squeeze into the crawl space to investigate some relics left from the Post family. He emerges with a copy of Treasure Island (overdue for 70 years) with a letter inside! His sister, Brid, and older brother CJ, decide to return the book to the New York Public Library. In return (after paying a $75 fine) the librarian gives them the package with yellowed tape left by Mr. Post for his children.

So begins an elaborate treasure hunt that will have the Smithfork kids together with Eleanor exploring New York City, solving secret codes, discovering hidden clues, and analyzing a book of poems. In the process, they will encounter a shadowy, threatening intruder. Where will the clues lead? What dangers will they face?

Walls Within Walls by Maureen Sherry, a modern Manhattan mystery, is filled with secret codes, treasure hunt for early 20th Century historical treasure. The activities challenge readers to decipher shadowed codes that grow more difficult with each encounter.
