The Good Old Days ... don't you just love nostalgia?
In
the "good old days," standardized tests were given
in October. That made sense because our average to gifted kids
didn't have to be bored with practice for a test they can pass
in October. We could let them FLY with real, authentic novel
studies and problem solving that crossed the curriculum with
authentic learning! My kids always researched their choice of
topics and then spent five weeks at the end of school weaving
their research results into phenomenal writing, collaborating,
editing, revising, and publishing their own hand-written, self-illustrated
book. We made one copy for the library collection and let the
kids take home their originals.
We
could concentrate our remedial efforts on the kids who were
a little slower on picking up on "the code" with exciting
literature-based lessons instead of practice tests! They always
"aced the test" and loved to come to school.
But,
"those who knew better," in all their wisdom decided
that it was really about grading the teacher, so they gave us
all year to get the kids ready through practice tests which,
in essence, stopped the engine to let the caboose catch up.
Our gifted kids learned how to be bored, but all in all, I have
to admit, most of our students learned to bubble dots well.
For
those of you in public education who are lucky enough to have
administrators who respect kids' desire to learn, admire your
enthusiasm for teaching, and inspire you to teach out of the
box, we here at Kids Wings have the most fun collection of literature
guides for REAL award-winning literature with FUN activities
by the super exciting teachers your children all want!
For
you who are homeschoolers, don't fall for a cookie cutter curriculum
that reduces your influence to making home into the schools
from which you fled! Make it vibrant with the very best books
at the hub of their studies!
